High Elf BSB

Finally finished up my BSB.  I was putting this one off for a long time along with the standard for my archer unit.  Painting the big flags just scares the shit out of me.  I sucked it up and did both of them.  Pics of the archer standard coming up after I get to take some pics of it.

Anyway, all of the other banners in the army are white so for this I wanted something colorful that would stand out.

BSB

From a distance I think the banner is pretty sharp looking.

BSB

Picking out each scale on the armor is a pain, but I better get used to it. The Swordmaster and Seagaurd models will be the same thing.

BSB

This is my least favorite part.  I’m not happy with the shading on the back of the banner.  I may go back and touch this up if I have time before Crossroads.

Freehand Dwarf Designs

I tried painting a Dwarf runic face on the shield of my Anvil Guard. I’ve always shied away from doing Dwarf runic designs, as they require precise geometric shapes and symmetry, which is really difficult. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how it came out.

Warrior Test Model

Hey guys, I haven’t played around with any basing ideas yet but I thought I’d get your opinions on a test model for the WoC.  Advice is more than welcome!

Swordmaster color test

I airbrushed on the base coats for all of the new Swordmaster sculpts, but this is the first one I’ve gone back to finish.  Being the first, there was a bit of experimenting with highlight colors.  Also, I’m using a strange mix of paint ranges right now.  Old Citadel, New Citadel, P3, and multiple Vallejo lines.

Anyway, just a quick update so here are the pics.

Confession

I admit it. I’m officially a jerk. Let me explain.

I don’t like the Anvil of Doom… at all. I think the ability to charge in the shooting phase is broken. I hate that it misfires at the most inopportune of moments. Most of all, I hate that you can’t build a competitive Dwarf list without it.

It’s been a loooooooooooooooong time since I used the Anvil. So long, in fact, that I actually traded my Anvil model away to a buddy. However, last time I took Dwarfs to a GT (Crossroads 2011) I got stomped with my fluffy list. After September, my Vampire Counts are going into retirement for a while. My new Orc and Goblin army  will not be ready for who knows how long. That means I need something to play in the meantime. Back to the Dwarfs it is!

This time, my list will still be fairly fluffy. I’m still running very light on war machines, using a crazy unit of Slayers, Dwarf Warriors with hand weapon and shield ONLY, and multiple small units. Unfortunately, I gave in and decided to bring the Anvil. After all, it might be nice to win SOMETIMES. 🙂

I’m still working on the conversion, but what do you think so far? Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Adventures in Glazes

So in continuing to try and finalize a color scheme for my warriors I’m playing around with a lot of the new paints including the glazes.  There’s a post on the forums showing some Chaos Warriors that I based/highlighted (excuse my feeble first attempts at highlighting!) orange and then glazed with either the yellow or orange glaze.  Now I’ve gone and painted the cloak blue, highlighted it up a bit, drybrushed the fur and then put a blue glaze over.  If I get these photos up in the right order you’ll see the front before and after the glaze then the back before and after.  I’m not sure how well the differences will show in these pictures but there is a real difference in person. Enjoy.

Warp Lightning Cannon

Not in time for the tournament last weekend, but at least it’s done now.  I had to spend one more full day painting to get the crew done.

This was my first try at light sourcing.  I went very light on it for a few reasons.  Being my first try, I figured I’d work into it.  Also, since it needed to be ready for a tournament the next day I didn’t have time to re-paint it if it got screwed up!  So, it’s subtle and I’ll work from there trying it out again as I move forward with more models.  I think it’s kind of like freehand, you just have to suck it up and do it and get some experience at it.

Overall, nothing special about painting this model really except that it got done in  . .  13 pieces?  Lucky Skaven number I guess.  It took a deceivingly long time to paint because of all the little nobs, armor plates, spikes and what not on the chasis.

The crew were especially fun to paint. I love the models!

Little bit of glow on the top and bottom of the warpstone section.

Adventures in Airbrushing – part 5

I used the airbrush this time to very quickly basecoat the Warp Lightning Cannon.

That white wheel is what happens when you have too much stuff sitting around on your painting table I guess.  You lose parts!

Unfortunately, this model still took a stupid long time to paint!  All those little gears and armor plates and what not took quite a while to pick out.  Finished pics coming up tomorrow.
